Sponge, deodorize yourself man… you smell!

So, today while wiping down the cutting board after I’d chopped up some onions to make lentil soup, I thought to myself: “Sponge, you smell”. I could either:

  • Throw said sponge away or
  • Sanitize it with some essential oils by either boiling or nuking it for a short while in the microwave.

I prefer to use the boiling method since it fragrances your home at the same time. Two birds, one stone.

To do so, just position a pot that you don’t plan on using for cooking on the stove over low-medium heat, fill it with ample water, place your sponge in along with a couple of drops of your favorite essential oil (2-3 should suffice). Some of my favorites are Lemon, Lime (my two absolute faves), Ginger, Cinnamon (depending on the time of year). I normally leave the cookware on for 15-20 mins for maximum yummy smelling home effect.

If you’re forgetful, I definitely recommend that you nuke your sponge instead, unless you’re looking to turn it into a burnt gooey mess. Simply put a wet sponge in the microwave for approx 2 minutes and voila!

“The results showed that two minutes in the microwave at full power killed or inactivated more than 99% of all the living germs and the bacterial spores in the sponges and pads, including E. coli.”WebMD
